Video: The Startup of A LS6-Swapped 1973 Porsche 914 Project

The Porsche 914 is a very cool little car. Produced from 1969-1976, the 914 was the result of Porsche phasing out the 912 and Volkswagen wanting a range-topping sports coupe to replace the Karmann Ghia.

The top-of-the-line 914 employed a flat-six engine that produced 100 horsepower back in 1973, but nowadays that kind of power simply doesn’t cut it. The owner of this 914 obviously thought the same thing, so he cut up the car and outfitted it with an LS6 engine. The engine is mated to a Porsche G50 5-speed manual and the suspension components are out of a 911/996. The owner also installed a 911 steering rack and electric power steering pump to make the vehicle a little easier on the biceps.

“Gonna give it a start. Let’s see if it starts and runs… Or just explodes. We’ll see,” he says before starting it up. We love how he gives himself some great assurance before firing up his own creation. The first start was a dud, but after connecting one wire, the engine starts up and idles just like it’s supposed to. We would expect that the owner is pretty happy that his creation ran without a further hitch (and didn’t explode).

As the man walks around the front of his car, it gave us a good glimpse of his cooling setup, which includes a horizontally-mounted radiator, two electric fans, and some welded-in bracing to stiffen up the front end. We know that there’s a lot left to cover in his build, but if he’s trying to keep the whole car under 2,400 pounds, then it’s something we have to see. This little Porsche is going to terrorize the streets and hopefully the track when it’s all said and done. Props to the owner for building a sweet little Porsche.
