You probably read the article title and said, “now, why would somebody with a bone-stock C6 Z06 want to race a Charger Hellcat? It’s got 200 more horsepower!”
Yes, the Charger Hellcat’s supercharged 6.2-liter V8 makes 707 horsepower, but it also weighs more than two tons, which is significantly heavier than a C6 Z06 that has a curb weight of 3,130 pounds. The Hellcat also has an 8-speed automatic gearbox that shifts pretty fast compared to the Z06’s manually-shifted six-speed transmission. Although the Z06 weighs over a thousand pounds less and puts down roughly 175 fewer ponies than the Hellcat, this race came down to power-to-weight.
Reading the comments on the YouTube video, we saw that someone said that the Hellcat beat the owner of the Z06 three times prior to this run, but we can’t prove that because this was the only run posted. However, this race between the Hellcat and C6 Z06 is a good example of power-to-weight.
We’re not knocking the Charger Hellcat, though, because it’s really is a nice car. We’re just tired of all of the “it makes more horsepower than anything else on the road” comments. Weight is a big factor, too, and that’s one area the Hellcat could improve on. We’re sure the Z06 owner was pretty stoked about his win, but it would be in his best interest to show up with a few modifications to the next Texas Speed Syndicate Quick 30 event he attends. Just saying!
