No, this Tool-Time Tuesday isn’t a recap of the 2001 movie Jeepers Creepers. We aren’t talking about the creeper style of shoes either. This Tuesday we are talking about automotive creepers! Automotive creepers aren’t exactly tools, but they make working on your vehicle a lot easier.
Automotive creepers are generally a device with wheels that you lay down on. Then allows you to easily roll around under a car while working on it, saving yourself time and frustration. The other style is more a seat that’s low to the ground that has wheels on it. Both styles of creepers are great to have in the shop when wrenching away.
The first style, allows you to roll around flat. These come in a few different variations, but the principal is the same with them; they allow you to lay down, then roll under a vehicle instead of having to pull yourself under. The materials they are made out of differs as well from one version to the next as some are plastic and some are a metal frame with a padded top. The only real options for these is that some of them have an adjustable headrest, saving yourself from straining your neck.
The second style is more or less a chair on wheels. They are low to the ground, perfect for working on brakes and suspension or anything around that level. These usually have a little shelf under the seat which is great for holding tools. This style is also great to have for when you just want to have a seat and sip a cold beverage. The most basic versions have a small wooden seat to sit on, while some of the nicer ones have a padded seat.
Both versions of creepers are readily available with just about every manufacture having their own version. Sit or lay down on each one and see what feels the most comfortable to you. Once you decide, your troubles will roll away!
