For decades now, the Chevy Corvette has been known as the official car of the “midlife crisis.” While we don’t doubt that this remains true even today, AOL Autos reveals a different Chevy has topped the charts as one of the “best cars for your midlife crisis”- the modern Chevy Camaro. Is this truly GM’s new midlife crisis glory car?
The definition of a midlife crisis is simple. If you’ve made some drastic changes in your life after realizing your own mortality, chances are you’ve had a midlife crisis even if it was before or after your 50s. Many times, part of this midlife crisis includes getting a fast new car, one of which AOL Autos editors determined is likely meant to redefine you as a person and where you’re going the remainder of your life.
So as a collective group, the editors sat down and decided which cars available now would do the best job creating a new you without costing you your entire retirement fund (Hey, reinvented or not, you’ve still got to eat once your work career is over).
While some of the midlife crisis cars chosen are a bit unexpected, like the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT-S (costing around $136,000) and the Chrysler Town and Country mini van (costing between $30,000 and $40,000 depending on chosen options), other cars seemed right on the money for a semi-budget conscious middle aged person looking to get the kicks out of a vehicle they couldn’t afford or justify before. Among those cars is the Chevy Camaro coupe chosen by editor Adam Morath. A good choice if you ask us.
While the new Camaro is known for its power and stunning good looks, it’s the ode to yesteryear that solidified the choice, according to Morath. A true recapturing of one’s youth can easily be found in the modern fifth-generation Camaro, no matter if you grew up in an age of the vintage first-gens or generations a bit newer. Also with a cost starting at just $23,000 for a base 323hp V6, the Chevy Camaro is one of the most budget-friendly midlife crisis vehicle options on the list.
The modern Chevy Camaro is the only American sports car to make the AOL Autos list, joining cars like the Mini Cooper and Audi TT as viable additions to any midlifer’s garage. While the Corvette surprisingly didn’t make the list, we have a feeling it was due to price or the desire of the AOL editors to go beyond the cliché American sports car choice. But no matter what the reason, the Chevy Camaro has taken the reins and we don’t know many people of any age that will have a problem with that.
