A lot of people are talking about “alternative fuels” these days, which encompasses a wide array of fuel types that aren’t oil. While the flavor-du-jour these days are electric cars, biodiesel also has a lot of stout supporters as well, as it can be gleaned from plants and waste vegetable oil. Many restaurants sell their biodiesel to refiners, who turn it into fuel for cars that have been converted to run it.
Cars like this matte-black El Camino, which has a long, interesting history in addition to its flower-power engine. Jalopnik reports that this El Camino was once owned by actress Darryl Hannah, and it is now up for sale by the guy who bought it from her.
Daryl Hannah is a devoted vegan and political activist in addition to being an actress known for her roles in Blade Runner and Kill Bill. It shouldn’t be surprising that she also drives a car powered by veggie oil.
While initially we thought this might be a modern engine swap, it is actually one of just a small percentage of El Caminos outfitted with a 105 horsepower Oldsmobile 350 diesel engine. Though this ‘83 El Camino was rated at up to 33 mpg highway, it is painfully slow.
Which is no problem for a tree hugger like Hannah, who sold the El Camino back in 2007 and went out and bought another.
Well the original is back up for sale, and bidding just closed at $15,590. It’s the green car that keeps on giving! And hey, you got to admit, an El Camino that runs on french fry grease is pretty cool…and Daryl Hannah is still pretty hot (even though she is almost 52!)
Would you have shelled out almost $16,000 for this biodeisel El Camino?
