The COPO Camaro is one of the most sought after and well-known cars in the history of the Camaro model. Built for performance, few original examples of the COPO Camaro can be found today. However, that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Recently we found an extremely rare ‘69 COPO Camaro for sale on eBay. If you’ve ever wanted an all-original COPO, this may just be the car for you.
The Central Office Production Order or COPO Camaro came roaring into the muscle car world in the late ‘60s as a special order, high-performance f-body. Although it was never advertised in brochures or marketing information, you could order one of these potent muscle cars with the right amount of money and the right production numbers.
Giving the car it’s reputation as a beast on the track and on the street was the special order 427cui big block boasting 425hp under the hood. This engine not only packed quite a punch, it also took unsuspecting drivers by surprise, stuffed inside what seemed like an ordinary Camaro. Although the COPO Camaro wasn’t available for long, it changed the world of American muscle cars and remains an influential vehicle for modern muscle cars like the ‘11 COPO Camaro Concept car that appeared at the SEMA Show this year.
The Camaro we found on eBay is the epitome of everything COPO stood for. This particular example is a complete, numbers-matching vehicle that was purchased from the original owner in 1987. From that time until 2000, the car was kept in climate-controlled storage. In 2000, the COPO underwent a complete nut and bolt restoration.
The Camaro features its original numbers-matching 427cui big block with original rods and forged crankshaft. The original valve covers are still in place with a fresh coat of chrome. Even the factory-original smog valve is still on the engine. This Camaro also features its original numbers-matching M21 4-speed transmission with the original Hurst Shifter. The BE-coded rear end with 4.10 gears is also original.
In addition to all of the original parts, the Camaro also comes with a ton of original documentation, including the original title and transfer paper license plate, Protect-O-Plate, owners manual in its original protective sleeve, dealer stock card and sun visor key lock instruction sleeve.
Adding to the car’s value is its rare Dusk Blue exterior color with rare Dark Blue vinyl interior components. This is one of very few COPO Camaros that still has its original cowl tag still in place. The car even comes with its original ignition points covers, proving that this car was extremely well maintained with nothing thrown away.
