Although you may think just because you’re getting an HD that means you get the marketed big-capacity numbers. That isn’t the case. HD towing capacities differ based on a few different factors. This includes the model, configuration, towing method, and drivetrain.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Towing Capacities With Ball Hitch

Let’s start with 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD models equipped with a standard ball hitch. In this configuration, the highest towing capacity is 18,500 pounds, offered by Crew Cab models with the L5P diesel engine.

1. Requires 17-inch wheels.
2. Requires 18-inch or 20-inch wheels.
3. Requires 18-inch or 20-inch wheels. High Country trim level max capacity limited to 18,310 lbs. / 8,305 kg.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Towing Capacities With 5th Wheel / Gooseneck Hitch

Stepping up to a fifth-wheel hitch, the max towing capacity is increased to 18,510 pounds, offered by Long Bed / Regular Cab models with rear-wheel drive. More importantly, the other configurations also get a big boost in max tow ratings.

With the 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500HD model, max towing with a ball hitch is set at 20,000 pounds, as offered by the majority of models equipped with the diesel engine.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Towing Capacities With 5th Wheel / Gooseneck Hitch

Equipped with a fifth-wheel hitch, the 2022 Chevy Silverado 3500HD can tow upwards of 36,000 pounds (Long Bed / Regular Cab DRW with rear-wheel drive). The other configurations get a healthy boost in ratings as well.

1. High Country trim level max capacity limited to 16,230 lbs. / 7,362 kg.
2. High Country trim level max capacity limited to 21,030 lbs. / 9,539 kg.
3. High Country trim level max capacity limited to 16,110 lbs. / 7,307 kg.
4. High Country trim level max capacity limited to 20,910 lbs. / 9,485 kg.
5. High Country trim level max capacity limited to 15,900 lbs. / 7,212 kg.
6. High Country trim level max capacity limited to 31,000 lbs. / 14,061 kg.
7. When equipped with (NHT) Max Trailering Package and Gooseneck hitch, increases to 36,000 lb. / 16,329 kg max trailer weight rating.

With the revisions made for this year’s edition of the HD Silverado’s, it looks like they’ll be able to handle any load you put behind it.
