Computer controlled mill machines have been around for quite some time. However, that doesn’t make them any less awe inspiring for us. They are typically called Computer Numerical Control, or CNC for short. The amount of precision that one of these machines can achieve is incredible.
This video is one of Concept One’s machines. Concept One is located in Cumming, Georgia and manufactures aftermarket pulley and accessory drives. In this particular video, they are drilling and tapping holes for a reservoir, most likely for a power steering system.
First we see the machine drill two small holes, an inch or two apart. The CNC then swaps heads to a tap. We noticed that there is even a reservoir full of oil, and the machine dips the tap into the oil first. After tapping the small holes, the CNC changes heads again. This time, the CNC changes to a flat bit and recesses two areas for larger fittings. After that, the holes are drilled and tapped. Lastly, a bit comes and cleans up the edges of the holes for a finished product.
Watching a CNC machine work is really mesmerizing. Not only are they really efficient with the different bits and heads in place, they are extremely accurate. What that means is that the parts from Concept One will fit great and have tight tolerances without having to worry about a pulley wobbling around or a reservoir leaking in this case.
