If you want to go fast, then one of the first cars you look at should be the 580 horsepower Camaro ZL1, a supercharged muscle machine that from the factory can reach speeds of 184 MPH. That’s damn fast… but not quite as fast as competitors like the Shelby GT500, which Ford claims can top 202 MPH right out the factory gates.
Leave it up to Texas’s Hennessey Performance Engineering to finish what GM’s engineers started, giving the Camaro ZL1 that extra push it needs to join the 200 MPH (and then some) club. And it’s all in the name of science, of course!
Hennessey recently convinced the Texas State Police to shut down a portion of the “fastest highway in America”, Texas toll road SH 310, to test out the new TxTag automatic billing system. Hennessey used a Camaro ZL1 equipped with its HPE750 package, boosting output to 750 ponies and allowing for a top speed somewhere north of 200 MPH.
We say “somewhere” because during this test run, Hennessey’s driver was able to go 203.9 MPH, topping even the mighty Shelby GT500. With Texas being as big and as flat as it is, it really bolsters the argument for an “American Autobahn” where cars like the Camaro ZL1 can truly flex their muscle. It certainly would make commuting more fun.
