Video: Cleaning Your Corvette’s Engine the Proper Way

Before heading to a show or event, you more than likely clean your Corvette. But how often do you check to see that under your hood is just as meticulously clean? While it’s important to clean your engine regularly, just as it is to clean the exterior of your car, a surprising number of people don’t know how to do it properly. Luckily, on this week’s DRIVE Clean episode, host Larry Kosilla visits Classic Car Club Manhattan to show you the proper way to degrime your engine. Check it out above.

Using a 2006 Z06 as an example of a vehicle with a modern engine, complete with plastic covered wiring and components, Kosilla demonstrates how to properly clean an engine in eight easy steps.

The first step of cleaning your engine is to protect the exterior of your car from any potential scratches from leaning over the fenders.

Next is to check your engine’s temperature, cleaning it at a cool to warm temperature if there is little grime to lift, and a warm to hot temperature if there’s years worth of cleaning to do.

Next and certainly the most important, you want to cover all the components that shouldn’t be exposed to water, such as air cleaners, distributors, the alternator, battery cables and fuse boxes. Once these components are covered with plastic, which is secured in place, you can proceed by spraying down your engine with a hose equipped with a wide-angle nozzle.

Once everything has been scrubbed down well, you can rinse off the cleaner using the same wide-angle nozzle.

Once you’re done, you can apply a water-based dressing to any rubber or plastic components you wish to add extra shine to.

Cleaning your engine isn’t challenging and with these easy-to-follow steps, you’ll have your Corvette’s engine shining like it just rolled off the showroom floor. Now go out there and show everyone what your Corvette’s got!
