One of the downsides of building a car optimized for straight-line speed is that people tend to look at it as a “one trick pony.” They say it can’t turn, they say you can’t daily-drive it, they say they’d rather have something a little more versatile.

The Pontiac in this video, dubbed FR8Train, is definitely quick from point A to point B, with an iron block 408 fed pressurized air by an enormous single Forced Inductions Billet 94 V3/GT-55 1.40 A/R turbo under the hood. Well, mostly under – the outlet of the turbine section takes the shortest route possible for exhaust gasses to reach the outside world, straight through a hole in the hood.

That got the guys from 1320 Video thinking. Could this Trans Am do double duty, preparing seared meat while on the two-step building boost? At Omaha’s Ice Cream Cruise 2014, they decided to find out with a little improvisation, with mixed results.

As you can see in the video, the percussive effects of the two-step rev limiter thwarted attempts to actually cook either a hamburger patty or a hot dog successfully, and simply tossing the burger down the exhaust just causes it to be ejected into low earth orbit.

While the concept is sound, the execution was hampered by the ad-hoc nature of the attempt. Next time, we suggest trying shish kebabs or using a grill basket to keep things contained. Combine that with some potatoes wrapped in foil to bake under the hood, and you’re all set!
