Video: American Muscle VS. Electric Cars

(Editors note: This video isn’t the best representation of Chevy vs. Ford muscle, although it is interesting to see the two go head to head. You have been WARNED.)

See, there is a lot of rhetoric and debate over the future of personal mobility, i.e. electric cars. President Obama is a big fan of electric cars…but not everybody is a fan of Obama, or electric cars. As such, many conservative commentators have lambasted and harpooned electric cars as slow, expensive, and impractical. And on the last two counts, they are right. Electric cars are expensive, and for some people, the 75-100 mile range just isn’t enough to warrant the purchase.

But the commentators are wrong when they say electric cars are slow. Quite the contrary, as we have proven numerous times on this very website, electric cars can be quite fast. Faster than say, even, an American muscle car, as the SPEEDTV show Stuntbusters proves.

For all you EV haters out there, we’ve got one name for you; Tesla. Founded by PayPal pioneer Elon Musk, this all-electric car maker launched what is, to date, the fastest production EV you can buy. It isn’t cheap, at $109,000, but the Tesla Roadster is fast. It’s electric motor delivers instant torque and an insane 0-60 mph time in about 3.7 seconds. That’s faster than most Lamborghinis.

This comparison by Stuntbusters lined a Tesla Roadster up with against a 365 horsepower Porsche Carrera S, and the Tesla was so fast that it made the Porsche look like it was standing still. Going a step further, Stuntbusters lined up a ‘69 Camaro with a 427 big-block against a Shelby Daytona kit car converted to electricity. The Daytona puts out peak torque of over 1,300 ft-lbs…more than the Camaro ever did. And while the race was closer than the Tesla vs. Porsche contest, the electric car still won.

While we won’t go so far as to suggest that electric cars will one day replace combustion engines on the race track, the world of electrification has thrown open the doors to innovation and creativity. That is to say, we expect to see a lot more electric racers in the years to come.
