We love us some station wagons. Once the icon of dreaded “family vacations”, station wagons have gone from boring to bling in the span of a generation. These days you can find station wagons at the drag strip, road racing, and as Concours winning cars. They make the perfect sleeper, family hauler, and road tripper. You can even find station wagons in the least likely spots, like on the autocross track.
Over on Flickr we found these pictures of a resto-modded ’67 Chevelle station wagon on the autocross circuit, and even better, a video of this long-roof bad boy tackling the twisty course.
This car belongs to one “Scotch2006,” who refers to his project wagon as “Conestoga,” or “Connie” for short. It is a ’67 Chevelle four-door station wagon with all the makings of a real competitor car. The 383 small-block Chevy motor is loaded with all sorts of goodies, like shorty headers, upgraded heads, an aluminum intake, and a serpentine belt drive system. All of this is good for about 550 horsepower on 87 octane. Not only is this a race car, but it is a daily driver too. Not bad!
To really compete on the autocross circuit though, you need more than a powerful engine. This wagon has Baer 14-inch rotors with 6-piston calipers, a Flaming River quick-ration steering box, and upgraded suspension bits from front to back. Most impressive is the driver’s skill though…somehow he manages to weave back and forth with that heavy rear end without losing it, and we absolutely love the sound of that big V8 engine drowning out all the puny 4-bangers that showed up to compete. That is one station wagon we wouldn’t mind driving to work every day.
