Veteran’s Insane Matte Black 1967 Chevy Camaro Features LT5 Power!

Some cars just radiate raw power even when they’re standing still. Others, like Jake Hopper’s matte black 1967 Chevrolet Camaro, hide their secrets extremely well.

AutotopiaLA’s Shawn Davis recently got a shocking introduction to this garage-built beast from Monterey, California, a long-term project that now redefines “sleeper” with a 755-horsepower supercharged General Motors (GM) LT5 engine.

Hopper explained that the Camaro’s journey began about 12 years ago. His father found a ’67 in a Colorado junkyard and did the initial build, including the matte black paint, while Hopper, a full-time military member, was on deployment. “It’s kind of taking a long time,” Hopper admitted, explaining how the car evolved through several engine iterations.

Lift the hood and you’ll find a rare GM LT5 crate engine, the same supercharged V8 found in the C7 Corvette ZR1. Hopper stated, “755 horsepower, 715 foot-pounds of torque … and that’s how I have it set up here. Just stock.” He added, “I didn’t want to mess with the engine too much… it’s kind of the ultimate engine as it is.”

Hopper connected this engine to a T-56 Magnum F 6-speed and a Ford 9-inch rearend that’d finished with 3.70 gears. The chassis benefits from a SpeedTech Extreme front subframe and four-link rear suspension, along with Detroit Speed subframe connectors, a roll cage, and mini-tubs that swallow big 315-section Forgeline wheels.

He also installed some Wilwood manual brakes to handle stopping duties. Remarkably, Hopper noted, “I did this all in a single-car garage too, by the way… that was challenging as well.”

Davis was clearly thrilled during the test drive. He commented, “Wow, this car sure feels good on the road! You’ve done a great job!” He praised the car’s setup and noted that there were no warnings or excuses from Hopper before he pushed it hard.

After experiencing its raw acceleration, Davis later declared, “So that, my friends, is a properly built car, and I love that it’s garage built. I love that Jake figured it out on his own … building a seriously badass street car.”

Jake Hopper‘s garage-built ’67 Camaro, with its factory-supercharged LT5 engine pushing out 755 horsepower, is a good example of dedication and vision.

This machine proves that a classic car can produce extreme modern power with the right parts and modification. To Jake, for his many years of service and for sharing this awesome build, thank you.
