The word M80 usually conjures up images of kids blowing up mailboxes with these fireworks. Chevrolet released its own firework in 1980, the Malibu M80.
Hemmings Motor News found this sweet gem for sale, and we thought it was too cool to pass up. For most people, they remember the Malibu from 1964-1972, before the age of smog motors and safety regulations. This 1980 Malibu was an attempt by Chevrolet to revive some of the muscle car enthusiasm from the 60s and 70s. The M80 version is a rare breed, with less than 2,000 ever being produced.
The downside is that the M80 version is purely a cosmetic package. There’s no supercharger, improved suspension, or different engine. What the M80 package did give you was eye catching appeal. “All M80′s had to be white with a dark blue interior. The base of the M80 was a 2-door sport coupe equipped with the normal V8 (140 hp) drive train. The M80 option added two dark blue skunk stripes on top and a lower door stripe with the M80 identification. The package also added front and rear spoilers and 1981 steel rally wheels,” states Hemmings.
While the M80 had a lot left on the table as far as performance, there was none left for cosmetics. The white paint and dark blue stripes really set the car off, giving the car a unique look. We just wish that there was some cool engine stuffed under the hood to compliment it all.
