One of the first pages many of us turn to when we get our new Summit Racing catalog is the center fold-out to check out the featured car. These cars typically get built utilizing Summit Racing’s vast inventory of performance parts, and that feature also serves another purpose: to motivate us to get our own projects going again.

For those who weren’t aware, Summit Racing also has an automotive blog called On All Cylinders which brings news and car features to share with us. We were checking it out and were a little bit curious about the VW Microbus that appeared, so we took a closer look at it.

There doesn’t seem to be anything micro about this Microbus, especially considering the powertrain that gets this VW moving. Ken Prather bought this bus several years ago, and he bought it because he loves to tinker and wanted to do something mid-engined. What resulted from that plan was this 1962 VW Microbus with mid-engine power: a small-block Chevy with a Weiand 6-71 supercharger, to be exact.

The van has been called Rapit Transit and it doesn’t surprise us that this thing can move. But it’s more than just a novelty idea that came from Prather’s garage, this beast gets driven all over the place.

“It’s a street car”, Prather said when interviewed by Summit Racing. He’s been to Bonneville with it, driving it 4,000 miles round trip. He’s also taken it to North Carolina to run the Maxton Mile there, but hurt the motor and had to tow it home. The problem was fixed and it’s back out on the road.

That’s one thing we love about this creation: Prather drives it, and he drives it hard. He told his wife that this creation was going to be a fun one, and it looks every bit as fun as you can imagine.
