According to a report in the Detroit News, Bob Lutz may be headed back to GM as an adviser. Lutz, 79, was the man behind the Pontiac G8, had a hand in the new Camaro, and is generally considered to be a car guy’s car guy. He’s been a legend in the industry and has received major credit for creating a design renaissance at GM. He has actually held senior positions at each of the Big Three Detroit automakers over the years, including a stint with Chrysler. If you’re a fan of the Dodge Viper, you have Bob Lutz to thank for it.
Sources “familiar with the discussions,” say that Lutz has a close relationship with GM and is in discussions to make his advisory role more formal, though nothing appears to have been made permanent as of yet. Lutz told The Detroit News “If they want me to come in as a consultant, I’d be very happy to consider it.” GM has a history of bringing back retired executives as consultants including former GM CEO Fritz Henderson. He had worked as a consultant to the company after leaving in 2009, though he is no longer there today.
Lutz just recently completed a memoir of his career has been part of the Lotus Advisory Council since the fall of 2010.
