RecMech Motorsports’ Record-Breaking 269.6 MPH C6 Corvette

Speed is an intoxicating mistress. For many, their first taste sets them on a trajectory of modifications to achieve higher speeds and reach the boundaries of traction and power. Jason White and the team at RecMech Motorsports know all too well, the trials and triumphs that come from riding that fine line between grasping the unobtainable and being unexceptional.

The team recently secured their spot in the realm of greatness, as their turbocharged C6 Corvette crossed the line at the recent Bill Warner Cup memorial top speed challenge. Topping out at an amazing 269.6 miles-per-hour, the team not only broke their current standing record but also secured their Corvette as having the fastest Corvette pass outside of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

While the Loring Timing Association’s asphalt track surface offers much more traction than Bonneville’s salt, it is also only 1.5-miles in length. Just Bonneville’s pit area is twice the length of the track in Maine, where the Loring Timing Association holds its annual Bill Warner Cup event. But, thanks to that added adhesion, the team of RecMech Motorsports was able to twist the speedo needle to a solid 269 MPH in only one and a half miles! That’s only after Jason brought some wheel spin back under control at over 230 MPH!

This is the first test of the team’s new turbo install. After having only some preliminary tuning and testing, they were only able to make three passes due to the weather. Band-aids, such as boost control and traction control were deactivated, due to lack of time to test them adequately. Still, in the testing stage, wastegates were set at 18 psi and would creep up to 26 psi. The team had currently turned the boost down from 37 psi, because in their words, “it was too much, too soon.”

The car has a LOT more in it! – Jason White, RecMech Motorsports

Even in “just enough” mode, the car is quite respectable and established several new B/BFMS records during the event. On their way to the record-breaking mile-and-a-half run, the C6 also ticked the clocks at the one-mile stretch going 236.276 mph. A one-mile stretch doesn’t leave a lot of room for wheelspin at those speeds.

To achieve such speeds, the RecMech team installed a 431 ci LSx engine, built by Golen Engine Service. Stuffing the engine full of air comes by way of a single, 106mm Precision Turbo & Engine (PT106CEA) Turbo. Fuel is added by a Professional EFI Systems Inc. Pro128 ECU that is tuned to add-in the necessary fuel to safely use the 2-Stage, 200-shot of nitrous by Nitrous Outlet.

The engine was set up and tuned by Granite State Dyno and Tune. When all was said and done, the engine was pushing over 1,500 horsepower! Jason admits though, with the conservative boost level, “the car has a LOT more in it!” Keeping all that torque to the wheels is done thanks to the RPM Transmissions’ TR-6060 gearbox and differential. RideTech Level 2 coilovers and sway bars help to keep the torque and traction united at the rear wheels.

Wind tunnel testing was performed. The time in the tunnel garnered the C6 with an appreciable downforce at speed, whereas previously, the car was experiencing lift.

At these performance levels, safety is as important as speed. That’s why the RecMech Motorsports team relies on Delaware Chassis Works to make the car as strong, and safe as can be.

So, where does the team go from here? Considering that their last record was 259.5 mph, we’d say that they’re definitely headed up! The question will be, how far into the 270s will they get? The RecMech Motorsports website sets the goal at 280 mph. Will the team leap-frog entirely into the two-eighties? Time will tell, but even with those chutes trying to bring this bullet back down to sane speeds, we’d bet that they would definitely be open to hearing from a brake sponsor as well!
