Dakota Digital OBD-II Interface For Modern Engine Swaps

As late-model engine swaps continue to grow in popularity, getting all the modern creature comforts and diagnostics into a classic vehicle has become a top priority. It’s easy enough to wire up fuel and ignition, but when it comes time to display engine data on a digital dash, the process can get complicated. Dakota Digital’s BIM-01-2 OBD-II Interface offers a clean, reliable way to bring ECM information directly to the dash without installing a mess of sensors or custom wiring.

OBD-II Interface

Plug-And-Play Access To Real-Time Data

The BIM-01-2 connects directly to your vehicle’s OBD-II diagnostic port. From there, it pulls engine and transmission data straight from the ECM and feeds it to compatible Dakota Digital instrument systems. This includes popular platforms like GRFX, RTX, HDX, VHX, and VFD3, provided they use the black plastic control box. For older systems with a 3.5mm headphone jack-style BIM input, a simple adapter harness (P/N 394194) completes the link. If your gauge system uses an older aluminum box, it won’t work with this module.

Out of the box, this  OBD-II interface delivers key readouts like vehicle speed, engine rpm, coolant temperature, and check engine status. Depending on the ECM, it can also pull oil pressure, gear position, transmission temperature, intake air temperature, ambient air temperature, and even boost. However, the availability and accuracy of these values depend on the factory sensors and how the ECM is configured. Modified vehicles or standalone ECU swaps may not provide complete data coverage.

Broad Compatibility For Modern Swaps

The BIM-01-2 supports J1850 and CAN communication protocols, making it compatible with most GM and Ford vehicles from 1996 to present. Chrysler vehicles from 2004 onward are generally supported, though some earlier models may have issues. Other makes from 2008 and up with SAE-standard CAN systems can also work, but it’s important to verify before purchase.

Whether you’re working with a junkyard pull or a crate engine package, having this kind of compatibility makes life easier. The module handles the heavy lifting when it comes to interpreting ECM signals, so you don’t have to manually wire sensors or decipher data output. It’s especially useful for projects where the OBD-II port is still functional and accessible, like late-model LS or LT swaps in classic chassis.

Clean Installs Without Extra Sensors

OBD-II Interface

For anyone building a restomod, updating a classic truck, or simply modernizing a street machine, this module takes the guesswork out of displaying factory data. It eliminates the need to wire separate sending units and allows clean integration with digital gauges, all while keeping the factory OBD-II port functional. Because it works with factory ECM protocols and sensors, it helps keep your wiring minimal, your dash clean, and your installation professional.

If you’re running Dakota Digital gauges and a late-model ECM, the BIM-01-2 is a no-brainer. It bridges the gap between modern drivetrains and custom builds in a way that’s simple, reliable, and effective.
