In the latest installment of the Driveline University series by Comp Performance Group, auto enthusiasts can learn how to measure a driveshaft and replace a u-joint in a bind. Will Vance from TCI shows us how it’s done, but here’s the breakdown.
To measure the driveshaft length, take the slip yoke and insert it into the tail shaft of the transmission to where it’s sticking out about 3/4-inch to one-inch. Measure the distance between the centers of the front and rear u-joints. Take this measurement and round it to the nearest 1/4-inch increment. That’s the easiest way to get the length for your new driveshaft. Always check the measurements a few times to ensure accuracy as most parts manufactures do not accept returns because you ordered the wrong length.
When you are ready to install u-joints, make sure the bores are clear of burs or grooves that might catch the edge of the cap when you are installing it. Also, inspect the bores for cracks or nicks that will eventually lead to failure on down the road — and we don’t want that happening! Look over the welds one good time as well.
Keep in mind that the ideal procedure should be done using a press, this is the quick fix way to go when you’re in a pinch. That being said, use a piece of metal stop that’s a little smaller than the outer diameter of the cap you are installing and place it on a solid work surface. Install the cross joint, then with a hammer, tap on the welds to start the cap into the bore. Strike the yoke until the cross joint is above center. Raise the cross joint in the yoke to put the next cap on. Install the retaining clip and flip the driveshaft around and repeat the process.
That’s it, Comp Performance Group have now potentially saved you at the track or on the road!
