Now that the crew of The Build has finished up the preliminary bodywork on their 1965 Malibu SS, it’s time for the car’s body to go back on its frame. But because both the body and the frame are so cumbersome and heavy, the American Modern crew opted to turn the frame into a roller prior to bolting the body back on it so that the car could easily be moved around for the remainder of the work needed. Check out how they did that in this week’s episode of The Build above.
The suspension for the Malibu SS is set to be replaced in the near future, but in order to create a roller out of the frame, the old suspension components will work just fine. So with that, the crew of The Build gets to work bolting up the old suspension to the car’s frame, mocking up a rolling chassis to make future work on the car that much easier.
Because this is only a mock-up and not the car’s permanent rolling chassis, components are only put in temporarily, being bolted in only finger tight in some cases. The suspension is also put on without springs in the front, so that the crew doesn’t have to go through the trouble of compressing springs that won’t even be used on the finished car. Instead, two-by-four pieces of wood are used in their place, guaranteeing that the suspension won’t compress down on itself too far to cause damage once the car’s body is put on the frame and the roller is dropped to the floor.
The ’65 Malibu SS project car is slowly but surely coming together. Be sure to check back next week for the next edition of Malibu Monday!
