These days wallets are tight and budgets are limited, meaning that going shopping for a new car often means making compromises. Luckily we are living in something of a modern car Renaissance, and having the fastest car on the block no longer means shelling out more money than your monthly mortgage payment to owner a spirited driving machine.
Forbes recently put together a collection of the 10 Fastest Cars under $30,000, and somehow both the Camaro V6 and Camaro SS missed the cut, while cross-town rivals, the Mustang GT and Coupe, were included. What gives?
Forbes used data gathered by the folks at Edmunds Inside Line, determining the 10 “fastest” cars under $30,000 using only their 0-60 MPH time as an indicator of speed. The price point automatically means that the Camaro SS, with its $31,795 MSRP, is ineligible, though it is fast enough and still a comparable bargain with many other vehicles twice its price. Alright, so the Camaro SS is out on a technicality… but what about the Camaro V6?
Turns out the lesser cousin to the beefy LS-powered SS was also shunted off of this list because it was “too slow.” Edmunds recorded a half-second difference in 0-60 MPH time between the Mustang V6 and the Camaro V6, and while the Mustang made the list in both V6 and V8 variants, the Camaro is nowhere to be found. Yet the slow Honda Accord V6 (with a 0-60 mph sprint of 6.3 seconds) did make the list. What gives Forbes and Edmunds? In fact, the second half of this list is filled with cars like the Mazda 6 Grand Touring, Hyundai Sonata Turbo, and the Kia Optima Sx. Seriously, a Kia but no Camaro?
