The NASCAR of the 1950’s and 1960’s was nothing like the NASCAR of today. Those cars out on the oval track were the same cars you could go to any dealership and buy. Many original NASCAR drivers were moonshine runners and outlaws who just happened to become race car drivers. Alas, many of these cars were tossed aside or parted out, their future value disregarded as the need for parts and money superseded any thought of the future.
Bangshift came across this barn-find ’65 Impala once driven by Roy Mayne. The car is now up for sale on eBay for the low, low price of $75,000.
When the car first came up on eBay, it was a rusty hulk of a barn find. Parked for 42 years, the car had raced between 1965 and 1967 on many famous race tracks across the country. The best finish this particular car ever managed was 4th place at the Darlington 500. Not exactly superstar record, but certainly a competitor all the same.
The owner eventually sold the car to Shaun Coleman, who along with the gang at Miller Motorsports set to work righting this neglected piece of history. Amazingly, many of the original parts were able to be salvaged, and this car has been restored to its period-correct form. This includes the hand-written lettering on the side, the 427 big-block engine, and properly fitted interior. This isn’t just a show piece though; it ran hot laps at the Monterey Motorsports Festival. This is a piece of history we wouldn’t mind some seat time in.
