Just like in a lyric from a Springsteen song, in the 1960s every town across the USA had it’s local drag racing legends. These legends were born from the grudge races among the gasser ranks. Local legends included cars like Al Hofmann’s Hang ‘Em High, the Lil Hearse and Pure Hell, a ’57 Chevy that raced in ’60s and ’70s New York.
Pure Hell is this awesome ’57 Chevy gasser that has recently showed up on eBay (item #271257761274). Pure Hell has a bit of racing history behind her, she has spent most of her life on Long Island, New York. Here, she raced in the New York Nationals and at the West Hampton Drag Strip in her heyday.
Pure Hell was purchased by the current owner last year, who has since given her a new breathtaking paint job. This paint job is Metallic Blue with door art of a Devil’s head and the words “Pure Hell” surrounding it. Painted on the rear quarter panels are the words Mike’s Speed Shop, and Von Dutch inspired pinstriping sits on the hood.
Under the hood sits a staggering Chevy 302 which has been dated to 1969. The 302 is filled with speed parts both vintage and new, these include Edelbrock 202 Fuelie heads, an Edelbrock Victor Jr manifold, and a Holley 750 double pump carburetor.
The motor is running 11 to 1 compression and has a Comp Cams 580 solid lifter cam inside of the block. The motor exhales through down turned Flowmaster dual chamber exhausts and roars to life thanks to an MSD ignition with Accel spark plugs.
All of this is tied to a TH350 with recent valve body work and a shift kit that allows for smoother passes down the quarter mile. A 4.56 Posi Track sits out back and vintage traction bars keep the car under control.
Most of the sheet metal on the car is new, this includes the floors, the lower quarter panels and the lower rear fenders. The only things that need to be replaced are the door window glass and the brakes as they don’t have enough stopping power.
If you are looking for a vintage gasser project, this ’57 Chevy is for you. The bidding is currently at $7,100 (reserve not met) or you can purchase the car for $14,000.
