Most car models are lucky enough to stick around for a decade or two at most before the nameplate is discarded for something fresher. But a company as old and historically significant as GM has a long and rich history to draw from, and cars like the Camaro are absolutely irreplaceable, regardless of name. We’re fast approaching the 50th anniversary of the Camaro, and now is as good a time as any to look back at how far this muscle car has come.
Automobile Magazine crunched the numbers together and put out a sweet chart comparing all the vitals of the original 1967 Camaro Z28 and today’s 2014 model. It’s an eye-opener for sure.
Performance wise, all the stats are on the modern Camaro’s favor, with one key exception. For example, the ‘67 Camaro SS made 290 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque from its 302 cubic-inch V8, while today’s Z/28 is rated at 505 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque. The new Camaro Z/28 also has an independent rear axle compared the to live rear axle of its great grandaddy.
About the only advantage the ‘67 Camaro holds over today’s model is size and weight, with the debut Camaro weighing in at just 3,355 pounds, while the 2014 Z/28 weighs around 3,800 pounds. The 1967 model is also a whopping 30 inches shorter and 4 inches narrower, though the two share a wheelbase that is within four inches. Makes you wonder just how much of that extra length is really necessary, eh?
Comparisons aside, there’s just something about a classic Camaro – which would you choose for your own garage? Make sure you check out Automobile’s chart for yourself.
