An engine that’s really getting pushed hard needs a strong crankshaft. Besides a billet crank, a high-quality steel forged crank will provide a lot of strength. Howards Cams designed its Track Smart 3 forged cranks to be the kind of crank you can rely on in a high-performance application.
The Track Smart 3 cranks are made from premium 4340 steel forgings. Howards Cams has each crank rough machined with double streel relief operations to maximize dimensional stability. These cranks also feature numerous counterweights to help the crank’s balance and reduce the load on the bearings.
Howards Cams added lightening holes in all hole throws to help reduce the mass of the crank. To aid wear resistances, Howards Cams puts the Track Smart 3 cranks through a proprietary nitride hardening process. Each of the rough forgings is then sent to Callies Performance Products to receive finish machine work.
Luke Bandt from Howards Cams explains how the company approached the design of these cranks.
“The Tracksmart 3 crankshafts are our high-end forged cranks. These cranks are a strong, lightweight piece that will handle huge power numbers. We clearance all counterweights for piston clearance in stroker applications, and use large radii on all bearings. This crankshaft is an excellent choice if you’re looking to make 750+ horsepower.”
Howards Cams currently offers the Tracksmart 3 cranks for small-block and big-block Chevy applications, along with LS-based engine applications as well.
