The Hard Knox Chopper Ball is a drag race and car show put on by the Hard Knox Car Club of Anderson, South Carolina. This year’s show was held at the historic Greer Dragway in Greer, South Carolina.
Greer is located off Interstate 85, about halfway between Greensboro and Spartanburg, South Carolina. This area of the state is known as the car-central of South Carolina. There is a lot of drag racing and round-track racing, and, lots of car shows. If you are a car person, then this is the part of South Carolina you want to live in. Greer Dragway is the best-known of the several dragstrips in this area. The Hard Knox car club is one of several car clubs in the area, and this is the 16th year that the Hard Knox club has been putting on this two-day show.
Things started late on Friday afternoon about 4 PM, when participants and vendors started rolling in to set up and start testing and tuning their cars. The gates opened about 8 AM on Saturday when more of the drag racer and car show participants and spectators started rolling in. They quickly staked out their place throughout the grounds of the dragstrip.
Close to a hundred cars and a number of motorcycles set up for the car show on the lower end of the dragstrip. About 50 to 75 drag cars filled the pits for racing. The spectators had a great view of the action as they set up on the hill overlooking the strip. There must have been at least 2,000 spectators on hand for this year’s event. Even if you weren’t in attendance, you can check out the event in this gallery we’ve created for you.
Qualifying started about Noon and racing started immediately after. There was a purse of about $4,000 to be given to winners of the different classes. There were classes in Harley Drag Bike, Gassers, and Nostalgia Modified. Winners in those classes received $500.00. Class winners in the car show received $100 and a trophy. Drag racing ended about 4 PM and the Miss Hard Knox Pinup contest was held. There were fifteen gals that took part in the contest with the winner receiving her $100 prize.
All and all, the Chopper Ball event was a great afternoon of drag racing and showing cars. If you dig drag racing in its purest form, this is one show you should not miss. The Chopper Ball event is held at about the same time each year, so keep checking the Hard Knox Club Facebook page for next year’s date, and be sure to mark your calendar!
