SEMA 2019 – the sights, the smells, and the sounds are here in force. Adding to the glitz and glamour is Baja Designs and its stupendous green Chevy truck. The truck is a well-known fixture of the off-road subculture on Instagram, blasting through the dunes of Glamis with its owner, Peter Verboom.
We spoke with Baja Designs’ Brennan Scully to find out more about the truck and its significance. “It’s a 1955 Chevy 3100,” he explained. “Our company has known Peter and his truck for a long time. About 20 years ago, we used the truck in our product catalog, showcasing all of our HID lights. Since then, it’s remained essentially the same truck, the same form, except for the lights, which we change to showcase our latest and greatest.”
The Chevy had all sorts of Baja Designs lights installed. These included LP9 lights on the roof rack, as well as LP4 and LP6 lights on the front bumper.
Speaking of which, Baja Designs gave the Chevy more lights than a Christmas tree.
“We installed our new S1 lights, used as dust lights,” said Scully. “It has an RTLM third brake light and LP9s on the top rack. On the bumper, we installed LP6 and LP4 lights.”
The LP9s made an interesting impression that we followed up on with Scully.
“These lights feature a high and low-beam pattern, as well as a backlight,” he said. “They also have upgraded peripheral technology. These are due to side-shooting LEDs, giving the driver a fuller pattern of light, and cutting down on the number of lights needed.”
The ’55 uses a 454 cubic-inch big-block V8 connected to a Reid Racing Turbo 400 transmission. Power goes out to Dana 60 axles front-and-rear, combined with the grip coming from 35-inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/As. “It’s just a badass, high-horsepower sand truck,” said Scully.
