When it came time for Ultra Motorsports to build the 1957 GMC 100 with a compressed timeframe for the SEMA show, Todd Lowden selected to start the build with a TCI Engineering’s GM pickup custom IFS chassis. “We were under a tight schedule to make the show and TCI’s chassis made it easy,” said Lowden. “All the mounting points were right on. They made it real easy,” he added with a smile.
TCI Engineering’s main frame rails have extended height from six-inches to eight-inches which adds some clearance between the upper and lower X-members, plus adding some rigidity in the frame. Despite the added height, the body maintains the original profile. In this particular application, the 4-link rear suspension creates a lowered stance which everyone loved on the finished build.
Lowden tells us the chassis has great handling, a lowered center of gravity, and a smoother ride. In addition to the 4-link rear suspension, the build has four corner coilovers. Powered by a GM Performance LS3 crate engine with 525 horsepower, and an automatic transmission, this truck is not your father’s GMC.
Coverd with Sherwin Williams’ Genesis epoxy primer, P30 primer, topped with their “Back in Black” base coat with a top coat of CC200 Dynamic Clear. Add some modern comforts like the Dakota Digital instruments and a nice leather interior, this truck would be at home cruising or on the autocross course.
