Chevrolet has never let us down when it comes to making high-performance cars. Every year, their offerings seem to get more impressive than the last, and this year is certainly no exception. On the day before they put two of their new special editions on display, they hosted a special invite-only event to show a select few what they have done with then 50th anniversary Hot Wheels Edition COPO Camaro; we were there, and these cars did not disappoint!
While you can already read all about these cars here, we were able to get the exclusive about the COPO from the best source possible; LSX Editor Chase Christensen got the honor of interviewing Head of Camaro Program, Al Oppenheiser, to get his impressions on the cars.
Al is very proud of their work on the Hot Wheels edition, and with good reason. The very first Hot Wheels ever released was a Camaro, and the team from Chevy was recently at Mattel helping them celebrate the five decades of the brand. Not only did they get to make a really cool COPO from the concept, they were also able to display a similar orange to the famous Hugger Orange paint job, which is something many fans will appreciate; although this paint job is technically called Super Crush instead. Unfortunately, only the production orange will be available for buyers as this is just an exclusive SEMA option. Besides the special paint job, the lucky 69 who are able to buy a 2018 COPO will be able to get the Hot Wheels version as you see it; it will come with the full striping and special decals.
Another cool part of the rollout is a 302 LT-based engine option that will allow it to spin at higher RPMs by shortening the throw of the crankshaft. While only 69 people will actually get their hands on a COPO, this engine will be much more readily available as it will be offered as a crate engine as well. We can’t wait to see what kinds of builds these crate engines will go in!
