SEMA 2016: Hedman Launches LS Swap Manifolds, Mid-Length BBC Headers

GM’s LS platform continues to be a leading source of product development in the aftermarket, as evidenced by the continual stream of new components for the venerable engine family here at the SEMA Show. Hedman Hedders has gotten in on the action this year with the launch of new exhaust manifolds for the LS engine, to go along with a brand new set of new headers.

For the LS and LS swap crowd, Hedman has just finalized and launched new cast iron exhaust manifolds, made with a super heavy-duty construction. As Hedman’s Marc Lewis explains, the tight layout of these manifolds, which closely mimic stock LS engine manifolds from the factory in their physical dimensions, are geared to swap applications where clearance may not allow for longer-tube headers. These manifolds have a 1-5/8-inch tube size, work with your A/C, power steering, floor shift manuals and automatic transmissions, and are compatible with GM LS1, LS2, LS3, and LS6 engines.

Another product that Hedman is excited about are their mid-length headers for 1964-67 Chevelle’s, Malibu’s, and El Camino’s with big-block 396’s and 502’s. These headers, as Lewis shares, are 1-3/4-inch primaries, mandrel bent and made of mild steel with Hedmans’ HTC silver ceramic-metallic finish. As Lewis points out, while other manufacturers produce headers for these vehicles, these are the first mid-length version, which provides more ground clearance for customers vehicles.

…there’s a reason why nobody makes them, and that’s because it’s a very complex design — the steering shaft actually goes through the tubes. – Marc Lewis

While not geared to it specifically, these headers are considered an excellent choice for Pro Touring-style cars, as the mid-length provides more low-end power for use in autocross and competition events.

“Everybody has a long-tube, but nobody has a mid-length. And there’s a reason why nobody makes them, and that’s because it’s a very complex design — the steering shaft actually goes through the tubes. But there’s been considerable demand for these, because most headers sit below the frame, so by doing this, it raises them up so you don’t have to worry about hanging exhaust.”

You’ll also want to keep an eye out for other cool new products from Hedman, including a range of Swap-In-A-Box kits for putting LS engines in 1967-69 F-bodies and 1968-75 X-bodies, as well as 1967-72 Chevy/GMC C-10 and C-20 pickups.
