SEMA 2015: Keeping Things Brushed With Powermaster

Making our way around the showroom floor, we stopped to have a chat with our friends at Powermaster Performance Starters & Alternators and came across a few new products the company was showcasing for 2016.

The black wrinkle finish on these alternators are aimed specifically at the growing truck market audience.

“For the truck market, we’ve introduced the black wrinkle finish on our alternators, which we hope will captivate this specific market since we really want to push it moving forward,” said J.R. Richmond of Powermaster. “It fits right into the stock brackets, but will provide over 200 amps, roughly 140 at idle. It’s great for the plow guys or the builds that have plenty of lights inside and out.”

Powermaster is also focusing on a specific market: the 2003 to 2004 Ford SVT Cobra applications. “The 03-04 SVT Cobra guys have been asking for it and we’ve made an alternator to help keep up with all the boost they are putting out,” said Richmond. “We’re putting on the correct eight-groove pulley and diameter that will create increased amperage load at idle and on the high side. They are also direct bolt-ins that are easy to install.”

Powermaster also showcased its GM alternators, which now come in a clean brushed finish. It is a step away from the typical chrome we are used to seeing in old school musclecar applications.

The alternators for GM applications feature an elegant brushed look that is refreshing for the musclecar scene.

“The brushed finish will be available on all GM alternators,” said Richmond. “We actually take these from a natural casting, then they are fully polished and put into a tumbler to create a nice grained finish. There is no clear coat or anodize on them, and are the easiest to maintain. If anything like antifreeze or oil gets on it, you use Scotch-Brite and make it look new again.”

These brushed finish alternators will be available for all GM vehicles from 1963 to 2010. With enthusiasts looking to steer away from chrome and more towards the stainless steel finishes found on home appliances, Powermaster wants to add this nice touch when your hood is popped. The next product Richmond spoke about was the PowerGEN alternators, which provide the look of a generator, but have all the capabilities, output, and reliability of an alternator.

“Our flathead four PowerGEN’s are really hot for us right now,” said Richmond. “An alternator doesn’t look at home with the position at the top of the engine, so these give the correct look and proper power to help a hot-rodder get down the road with some tunes.”

Looking to touch all bases, Powermaster also has a starter currently in development that will fit a majority of Ford vehicle applications.

The Ford starter may be in development, but it is set to be applicable to most Ford vehicle applications.

“We’re also working on a product to cover numerous years of Ford applications,” said Richmond. “This starter will cover all of Ford’s 4.6, 5.0, 5.4, 5.8, and 6.8-liter engines. It’s a noseless starter that comes in a black wrinkle finish, which is quite heat-resistant and also features steel gear inserts, which no other starter on the market has. There are no bushings or plastic, which will help starters have a longer lifespan.”

With so many products in line for the new year, 2016 looks to be an ambitious year for Powermaster. It may only be cosmetic on some of the existing products, but the transition from chrome to stainless and brushed finishes is becoming a growing trend in the automotive aftermarket.

Powermaster had plenty of new products on display at SEMA this year.
