SEMA 2013: Chris Alston’s Chassisworks’ Component Drive System

IMG_0448Finding efficiency and freeing up horsepower is nothing new, and neither is crank-driven superchargers. But putting a new spin on typically belt-driven components is something that Chris Alston’s Chassisworks showed us at SEMA this year on one of their display cars – a very custom, Pro-Touring Camaro and Mustang from their gStreet Pro-Touring Chassis System.

While the Camaro wore lots of their products and suspension components, what specifically drew our attention was the front drive system that drove not only the Vortech centrifugal supercharger, but lots of other components as well. Lino Chestang, Marketing Manager at Chassisworks, explained that you can drive up to seven accessories, currently, with this front drive unit. The Component Drive Systems (CDS) are designed to work with SBC, BBC, LS-Series Chevrolets, and Ford small-blocks and modular motors.

He also pointed out that there’s another, cable-drive option that has been added to drive even more accessories. Some of the components on that drive system include a water pump, fuel pump, alternator, distributor, and power steering pump. This setup eliminates the need for any pulley-driven V-belts to drive components and frees up power, and eliminates issues with pulley-driven V-belts – which can easily slip at higher engine speeds – and if you have room for an accessory drive like this, it keeps components out of the way of the intake system. Components are driven by either gear or cogged drive belts for racing and street-performance engines.

Aside from the direct drive system, the Camaro also sported many of the components that Chassisworks manufactures for the Pro-Touring market, like a beefier front subframe and front suspension components, rear multi-link setup on the rearend, and roll bar and roll cage components, all of which are for the serious builder and competitor in the autocross.

While many of these components aren’t meant for the daily driver, and are better suited for hardcore competition, they’re all available online through the Chassisworks web site, where you can request a full catalog – including all of their new products for 2013.
