PRI 2016: Moser’s Triple Play of Suspension, Braking & Driveline

Moser Engineering might be best known for its axles, but its line-up has vastly expanded over the last few years. When we caught up with Jeff Andersen, Moser’s Marketing Director, at this year’s PRI Show he couldn’t wait to tell us about three key new products.

First up are the new stainless steel rotors. “Moser Engineering has had our performance drag brakes out for a while – very successful. We’ve been getting a lot of kudos from the racers that use these, but one of the things we’ve noticed is certain guys in the field have aggressive driving styles and generate some real heat in the rotors.” To prevent cupping and other issues with the standard rotor, stainless steel can better handle the heat and offer a longer lifespan.

The new rotors are offered with a Hawk DTC-30 pad that allows you to be aggressive at the line without risking damage to the rotor. Like the standard rotor, the new rotors are a two-piece design with an aluminum hat and Moser’s innovative spiral rings that lock the rotor into the hat – no nuts or screws that are impossible to get apart after a few heat cycles. The new stainless steel rotors have been track tested over the last four years before being released to the public, Jeff said.

And now on to the C10 trailing arms. The 1960 to 1972 Chevy/GMC C10 trucks were certainly on Moser’s radar. “We’ve offered rearends for the older trucks – the ’60 to ’72 C10 series has become real popular in the last few years – but a lot of times guys don’t want to do anything real crazy with the suspension,” Jeff explained. “Guys wanted to use the normal suspension mounting points, and this was just the normal progression in expanding that line. The original trailing arms that came on those trucks were an I-beam stamped steel, and notorious for rusting out. You can buy those aftermarket replacements, but with the readily available horsepower out there this just makes sense. It gives you the ability to upgrade the power without destroying the factory style trailing arms and gives you room to grow as you increase the power.”

Jeff said Moser’s boxed C10 trailing arms are ideal for your typical street-driven truck. Silver powdercoat is standard, however, other finishes are available. New U-bolts, coil spring pockets, new bushings, emergency brake cable brackets, and all required hardware are included.

The new Moser M88 rearend is a direct factory replacement for the venerable Ford 8.8-inch found in 1979 to 2014 Mustangs. Now that the solid axle is out of production, demand has increased for a bolt in replacement for customers that feel a 9-inch is overkill. Of course, since it is Moser, they made a few improvements along the way like stronger main caps. “We decided to take that very successful 8.8 unit and give it a shot of adrenaline,” Jeff said. “We increased the strength of the material in the nodular casting, so it is stronger. We switched it over to 3-inch OD, quarter wall DOM seamless tubing. And basically had a few more pathways put in for cooling the bearings.

“The 8.8 ring and pinion is very popular, it meets all the NVH standards,” Jeff continued. “For a guy that doesn’t really need a 9-inch, this just makes sense.” This negates skimming the junkyard and gives manufactures like Factory Five the ability to have a brand new unit. Kits are available to reuse the stock brakes or upgrade to aftermarket versions. Powdercoating is available as well, and you can also convert the pinion yoke to 1310/1350 style. A variety of gear ratios and differential options complete the rear, putting performance at your fingertips.

Moser Engineering began because racer Greg Moser couldn’t wait 6-8 weeks or even 3 months for a new axle, according to Jeff. His impatience and competitive drive paid off when he started applying his knowledge from his steel forging business to meet the demands of fellow racers. By developing a process to cut and spline an axle in one day, Moser was able to offer unparalleled service to racers. Though drag racing is not the largest percentage of their business, it continues to be a focus.

“To this day, you can place an order with us, whether it is an axle or rearend, and it is custom built within two business days. We also offer an expedited service, which is a one-day turnaround, where you can buy a center section and axles or even a housing and we can get it out the door in 24 hours so you can make your next race.”
