PRI 2013: A New Strange Aluminum Rearend For 5th Gen Camaros

DSC_4476

Factory automobiles have really come a long way in the past couple of decades and the drivetrain components have progressed along with everything else. Factory rearends are designed to work with the factory horsepower numbers, but as we’ve seen, horsepower is inexpensive these days with superchargers, turbochargers and nitrous kits available on request. When you make a modification with power adders, you probably need to look at getting a stouter rearend to handle that extra power.

DSC_4478“Factory units are designed to work with factory horsepower numbers, and they can handle a little more but you don’t want to push it too much,” says JC Cascio of Strange Engineering. “Our Aluminum 9.75″ 5th Gen Camaro rearend offers an option to the standard 9-inch steel fabricated units. This one-piece aluminum unit has comparable strength and quieter operation.”

Cascio explains that the new Camaro rearend is also quieter in its operation. “The unit uses Dana 60 internals which means you can use a Dana spicer gear. That makes for an easy setup and quieter compared to some of the aftermarket 9-inch assemblies on the market today.”

Features of Strange Engineering’s Aluminum 9.75-inch 5th Gen Camaro Rearend:

  • Seamless “bolt-in” installation
  • Lightweight 206-T4 aluminum
  • Finned housing and radial ribbed cover design
  • Support style rear cover reinforces main caps to increase overall strength and rigidity
  • Aircraft grade2024-T351 billet aluminum main caps and steel adjuster nuts for precise gear setup
  • 35 spline Hy-Tuff axle shafts and helical differential
  • Ratios from 3.54 to 6.50
  • 1350 series standard pinion yoke
  • Polyurethane bushings
  • 35 spline S-trac

If the lighter weight and quiet operation aren’t enough to convince you that this is a must have unit, consider this; Cascio tells us the rearend comes with “a standard 35 spline S-trac posi unit that is a great all around unit. It acts like an open under normal driving conditions but when you get a load on it, the gears wedge themselves together and it acts as a posi unit.”

That’s kind of like a best of both worlds scenario.
