When it comes to ultimate performance Camaros, there is no denying major contributors like Yenko, Baldwin-Motion and Nickey that started it all. Sure, times have changed since the early years of these stellar performance companies, but their legacies remain, reminding us of a yesteryear filled with raw American muscle.

With the return of the Camaro to the Chevrolet lineup in 2010, there was more demand than ever for the triumphant return of those great names who contributed so much to the high-performance muscle cars of the 60’s and 70’s, and they didn’t disappoint. Now, you can get yourself a brand new Camaro modified by these automotive greats (well, at least by name sake) and we were lucky enough to find one such Nickey Camaro recently at the Super Chevy Show at Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colorado.

Owned by Weston Serrano of Vernal, Utah, this modern Nickey was getting all kinds of attention at the Super Chevy Show and we must admit, we couldn’t take our eyes off of it. So we got in contact with Serrano to get the scoop on this fantastic ride.

Serrano got into cars at a young age, owning a ‘51 Ford Flathead V8 for his first vehicle, but he never really wanted a classic Nickey. As it turns out, he was inspired to get a modern Nickey after reading an article about the cars in a magazine. Serrano was stricken by the modern Nickey Camaro’s extreme performance and appealing creature comforts. “This new one has so many features that the old ones didn’t have,” Serrano told us. “That’s what makes it neat.”

Serrano’s car is a 2011 Camaro 2SS that he purchased in June of 2010 before shipping it off to Nickey Chicago for the full Nickey treatment. In January of 2011, Serrano picked it up and has been enjoying it ever since, even through a few necessary upgrades of his own.

While Nickey Chicago offers three stages for the fifth-generation Camaro, this fine example is of the notorious Stage III variety. That means an LS7 427ci engine, cold air induction system, special intake manifold, custom headers and a 3-inch exhaust with hi-flow stainless steel mufflers and custom diverters. Of course, we can’t forget about the car’s fully tunable Pedders Xa coilover suspension system, 3.73 rearend gears, 20-inch American Racing TT wheels, Redline tires, a custom Nickey interior and full exterior appearance upgrade. But these are just the “base” Stage III features and Serrano’s Nickey is not a base Stage III car.

Serrano also had his Nickey equipped with the Kenne Bell 5th Gen Supercharger Kit with liquid cooled supercharger, Mammoth Ram Air tube and Kenne Bell BOOST-A-PUMP fuel system. The car also features water/alcohol injection, a trans brake and a line lock system from Nickey. As far as pure power from this setup goes, you’re looking at 930hp.

The engine is matted to a new 4L85E from Driveline Specialties to handle the new-found power. Of course, Serrano wasn’t shy about drag racing the car, which took it’s toll rather quickly on the stock gearbox. In addition to the new transmission, the Camaro also has a durable new Ford 9-inch rearend that replaced the stock Chevy 12-bolt.

With the fresh upgrades and just 1,700 miles on the car, Serrano is looking forward to racing his Nickey again in Las Vegas at the 2012 Bracket Nationals. The last time he raced the car in Vegas, it pulled an 11.60-second quarter mile time. “I’m hoping to get into the 10’s eventually.” Serrano told us.

But the 2011 Nickey Camaro isn’t the only toy Serrano owns and drag races. In fact, in his warehouse of cars he’s got two ‘67 Camaros, three ‘68s and four ‘69s, one of which is a 9-second drag car. He also owns three ‘55 Chevys, a 2013 ZR1, a Z06 and a couple ‘65 GTOs (one like the 389 GTO he had back in the day, of which he told us “there wasn’t anything in this country that could out run it”), as well as a ‘31 Model A, ‘56 T-bird, ‘56 Vicky and ‘41 and ‘46 Ford convertibles. In total, Serrano tells us he owns between 25 and 28 cars, all licensed and insured to drive. “If I can’t drive them, I don’t want them.” Serrano told us.

It’s obvious  that Serrano loves his cars and we can’t think of a better way to express that than through his modern Nickey Camaro. “It is fun,” Serrano told us. “This thing does run.” So well in fact, that Serrano is thinking of upgrading to an even newer Nickey in the future.
