Traveling to Memphis, Tennessee, always delivers a great time. Visitors are greeted with a rich history of music, fun, Beale Street, and let’s not forget – bar-b-que ev-ery-thing — even spaghetti! If you’ve never tried the latter, you really should. The city is a destination for thousands of people each year, and on the September weekend of the 21st and 22nd of 2018, fans of Chevrolet’s F-Body cars converged on Memphis International Raceway for the second edition of the F-Body Nationals.
The second year might have been plagued with bad weather that might have “dampened” spirits, but there were those few die-hards that were determined to have a good time, be it on the drag strip, autocross course, show field, or by perusing the vendor’s booths.
The event’s name is a little misleading, as all generations of Camaro and Firebird were welcome at the massive Memphis facility. Once again, Classic Performance Products (CPP) sponsored the autocross, so show participants could prove their car has what it takes to cut a few corners with the best at the event. CPP even brought two of its own rides to show off and give rides.
Drag racing was sponsored by Jegs, and featured multiple classes, including DOT Street, Junior Eliminator, Super Eliminator, and Pro Mod. Grudge racing was even encouraged for those who want to line up against their friends for bragging rights. Speaking of racing action, Larry Dixon even brought out his two-seater rail to show off. It was cool to see it in person. We could only imagine what it would be like to sit in the passenger seat of that thing.
While the inclement weather did try to put a damper on the festivities – and even expedited the awards ceremony, those who didn’t throw in the towel were still greeted with a great time and camaraderie. Friday was hot and humid, but rain overnight at least made Saturday comfortable, or dare I say, cold!
The show always culminates with an awards ceremony, and one person wins big. The F-Body Nats, once again, presented one lucky show participant a beautiful Camaro they could take home. Nina Brock was one ecstatic lady when they called her name. We’re certain she could not have been happier than she was when she climbed behind the wheel of her brand new ’68 Camaro presented by SoffSeal.
