For some pro-touring enthusiasts, a build means beefing up the engine and suspension while maintaining much of the other parts of the stock vehicle. For others, however, creating their ultimate pro-tour car means changing up the seemingly minor things, like the interior. That is exactly the idea behind one of our latest finds on Pro-Touring.com. Not only is the owner of a ‘69 Camaro changing up his interior, he is fabricating a BMW dashboard to fit in the car.
Frank Jacobsen from Norway, the Pro-Touring member doing the interior swap on his Camaro, stated in his forum post that he never liked the look of the stock ‘69 Camaro dashboard. Wanting something different, Jacobsen decided on a BMW dash pulled out of a ‘09 E91 318TD station wagon, something we’ve never seen here in the States.
In order to get the dashboard to sit properly with the center console, as well as be able to incorporate the hand brake from the BMW, Jacobsen cut most of the driveshaft tunnel from the donor car and mounted it on top of the one in the Camaro. The light switch and start button from the BMW will also be used in the Camaro.
Although Jacobsen claims to not be as good at fabricating as the professionals, we think the finished dash will look amazing, especially with such a clean look resulting from the dash just being clamped in place. Surprisingly, it doesn’t look like Jacobsen will have to do any tweaking of the dash for door panels to fit perfectly, which is good news when it comes to such a major project.
Currently, Jacobsen is battling what most enthusiasts do when they pick up a well-used American muscle car- rust. The infected areas of the front of the Camaro must be fixed in order for the dash brackets to fit and work properly.
With the Speedhut gauges and ‘02 Firebird seats set to go into Jacobsen’s Camaro with the BWM dash, we are anxious to see the finished product. What do you think of the BMW dash swap? Is it cool and unique or too modern for a classic American muscle car?
