Everyone’s heard Prince’s “Little Red Corvette” on the radio due to its catchy upbeat hard driving melody. It’s been so done that it’s overdone, yet we found a new take on the song that been covered by almost everyone. Sarah Bettens, the outspoken rocker from Belgian and front person for the band K’s Choice, brings a few new dimensions to the song.
While Bettens is typically a hard rocker with her primary band, we found a slower, more artistic version of the lesbian rocker singing one of Prince’s more popular mainstream tunes.
The original version makes us think of a 1974 Stingray Corvette sliding around corners sideways, FAST!
Bettens’ version set us back on our acoustic heels however. Listening to the slower-paced Bettens’ vocals groove through the lyrics moves us closer to a first generation 1960 Corvette – in sportsman red of course – gliding down the highway with the top down. We picked the 1960 model year because of the designer’s choice of less chrome and more engine for that model, which fits perfectly with Bettens’ version of the song.
While the lyrics still refer to a one-night stand with a beautiful and “fast” woman–which the listeners are led to understand is the little red Corvette that needs to slow down before she crashes–Prince uses several other automobile metaphors throughout the song, which adds to the enjoyment for car enthusiasts.
No matter who performs the song, “Little Red Corvette” will continue to be a fan favorite of fast women and Chevy Corvette lovers.
