Video: Twin Turbo ’57 Chevy Bel Airs Tear Up The Dragstrip

Hungry for untamed American muscle? These two twin turbo 1957 Chevrolet Bel Airs featured on YouTube channel 1320 are pushing a combined 6,000hp.

Dubbed The Evil Twins, each of the two Bel Airs are monsters on the drag strip. Seen on the Discovery Channel’s Street Outlaws television show, Jeff Lutz Sr. and his son Jeff Lutz Jr. have embarked on building the fastest street machines.

On the road to victory.

Typically, a ’57 Bel Air comes stock with a 283ci 4.6L V8. However, each of the Evil Twins has a massive 692ci V8 engine and two 88mm turbos.

Furthermore, each Bel Air is shifted by a Rossler 210 transmission and a Gear Vendors Overdrive kit. Lutz nonchalantly mentioned The Evil Twin doing 225mph during Drag Week 2014.

The twin turbo setup in each of these mammoths stopped everyone in their tracks. Featured on television and at various car shows, Lutz’s two Bel Airs hardly ever go unseen.

Although the setups are identical on both cars, there is a substantial weight difference. Of the two, The Beast weighs 3000lbs as the Evil Twin weighs 3800lbs.

The weight was reduced significantly on The Beast by installing carbon-fiber floors panels, a lightweight Braille lithium battery and aluminum components.

In the video, Lutz Sr. mentioned that although the two cars look alike, one has two inch calipers as the other has four inch calipers. Also, a Precision Turbo decal separates the two monstrous Bel Airs apart.

The Evil Twin was crowned champion of Hot Rod Drag Week 2014, averaging 6.84 seconds at 212mph for the week. Not to mention, The Beast, driven by Jeff Lutz Jr. averaged 8.27 seconds at 166mph for the week.

“Its been a long time coming,” Lutz Sr. said. “We put a lot of heart and effort into this.”

Hot Rod’s Drag Week 2014 was held at various speedways in Oklahoma and Kansas from September 8-14. The event consisted of four tracks, five races and a true test of who owns the baddest street rod.

The Evil Twins travelled a total of 1,000 miles all while competing for the crown and bragging rights at Drag Week. Even the team from Street Outlaws were in attendance to cheer The Evil Twins on.

Lutz Sr. said they began work on The Evil Twin in 2009. He mentioned they encountered a few problems and faults, but they worked past it and gave birth to two legendary Bel Airs.

Not to mention, Lutz’s son did not do too shabby for a young drag racer. Lutz Jr. placed fourth overall in Hot Rod’s Drag Week 2014.

Lutz Jr. said he completed his first 200mph pass during Hot Rod’s Drag Week 2014. What was definitely a memorable week for the Lutz family, it was a message to enthusiasts the might of twin turbos.

What are your thoughts on these two lightning quick Bel Airs? Do you think The Evil Twin is capable of going faster?
