The Beach Boys song “Be True To Your School” speaks to the car enthusiasts and we’ve seen that motif show up time and time again. Most of the time we applaud it and then move on because it is a common theme. Then we met this 1950 Chevy Truck built by Klayton Shoals.
What makes this one different? The owner/builder is unique for starters. Standing 6-feet and 3-inches with a playing weight of 288 pounds of defensive end muscle, Klayton Shoals was the number one defensive end at Baylor University in 2006. Proud of his school? You bet!
In addition to football, Shoals was an automotive enthusiast. What better way to celebrate your college team than to custom build a truck that was built in the same year as the stadium that you played in? That is exactly what Shoals set out to do.
“Floyd Casey stadium was built in 1950, so of course I had to find a 1950 with the paper work to prove it. I found her deep in the mountains of Hot Springs, Arkansas,” Shoals said. “I returned home with her in tow about midnight and started to break her down before I built her back up, a complete off the frame restoration.”
When it came to school pride, Shoals explained, “No corners were cut. Being a former Baylor football player I had to represent for my alma mater and I did so in grand fashion.” We have to agree.
Shoals’ 1950 Chevrolet Pickup, a complete frame off restoration, was inspired by the classic old school Baylor University football uniforms with modern muscle and technology added. Boasting a 386 stroker with 700R Transmission, Camaro Z28 rearend, complete with 3:42 gears and disc brakes all around to whoa this monster down. This is a Floyd Casey Stadium Tribute, the same year the stadium doors were opened. It was set to be unveiled at the opening of the new McLane Stadium.
All we can say is… this truck has “Old Fight.”
