As the July 1 release date approaches for the third installment in the Transformers movie franchise, promotional activities, along with anticipation, have reached a peak. Long tied to the theme, Chevrolet has released a commercial called Getaway which prominently features the newest Camaro, the ZL1.
Chevrolet has used the Transformer movies to showcase new or future Camaro models and this evolution is no different.
Announced at the Chicago Auto Show, the ZL1 Camaro will arrive with a supercharged 6.2-liter engine pumping 550hp into the 6-speed manual transmission.
Aside from delivering brute power, the ZL1 also features magnetic ride suspension, 6-piston front and 4-piston rear disc brakes, an aluminum hood with carbon fiber air extractor, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels and HID headlamps.
The origin of the ZL1 name goes back to 1969 when a short run of Camaros were built using the all-aluminum 427cui engine. Intended for racing, the ZL1 was the most advanced Camaro of the time. Chevrolet brought the name back to life to reflect the highly specialized nature of this special Camaro version. Only 69 original ZL1 Camaros were ever built, making them one of the rarest and most collectible Camaros ever.
All this may not do you much good on the dark side of the moon, but keeping it here on Earth is going to be a blockbuster experience. You can get a taste of the future below.
