If you’ve ever been to a professional baseball game, you’ve probably witnessed the famed “mascot races” held during a break in innings. From hot dogs and soda cup mascots to famous sports stars and presidents, teams all across the country put their best foot forward to make these races as entertaining as possible.
This year, the Detroit Tigers are continuing this tradition but in a different way, introducing three new human-powered characters in correspondence with the Detroit Metro Chevy Dealers organization. That’s right, at Detroit Tigers games you will now be able to see the Motor City Wheels mascot races, featuring three iconic Chevy vehicles as mascots. Check out the promo video for the new mascot lineup above.
Starting Thursday, May 22nd, the Motor City Wheels mascots will race at all Detroit Tigers’ home games at Comerica Park. Inspired by the Motor City, mascots involved in the new races include a ’58 Corvette named Corey Vette, a ’57 Bel Air named Bella Air and a ’54 Chevy pickup named Petey Pickup.
“Detroit is a city that lives, breathes and dreams automotive and we have a tremendous amount of pride in that,” Paul Stanford, president of Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Local Marketing Association, stated in a CBS Detroit news release. “With the Motor City Wheels mascot races, we are giving fans a chance to get re-introduced to three classic cars that embrace our history and celebrate our heritage as the Motor City.”
In addition to the races that will be taking place, kids can get involved with the Motor City Wheels mascots by liking their Facebook page and keeping up to date on their latest race results.
They’re pretty silly, but in the spirit of the Motor City, we can see why the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Metro Chevy Dealers teamed up to bring a little automotive flair to their mascot races for the 2014 baseball season.
To see the debut race of the Motor City Wheels mascots, be sure to tune into the May 22nd Detroit Tigers game as they take on the Texas Rangers.
