Video: A 1969 Chevy Nova For the Atomic Age

1969 Chevy Nova Samson rearWhen it looks like you’ve seen everything, then along comes a car like this 1969 Chevy Nova. Derick Samson of Samson Design built this Nova for the Atomic age. While most gearheads look to the future when building their hot rods, Samson turned to the past. After installing a ’56 Chevy dash in the car, Samson was inspired to build his ride with a ’50’s influence.

The Nova looks like a car that would have been driven in the Fallout game series. It has a strong retro future influence that screams rockabilly, black leather jackets and a doll in the back seat. This can be seen through its vintage accents such as the ’56 Chevy steering wheel, the Mercedes moss green paint job and the exterior ’56 Chevy emblems replacing the 69 emblems.

Other subtle nostalgic touches include an engine dress up kit and the ’56 Chevy scripts on the engine cover. A ’56 Chevy horn emblem has been molded into the master cylinder for vintage styling. The interior features hand stitched leather door paneling which ties into the dash. The door hinges are covered in leather boots and as are the pedals.

The sheet metal for the center console and the doors were fabricated by Samson himself. He also hand stitched the leather for the seats, which also have a retro design. The dash was narrowed by 3 inches, then the height was stretched to accommodate the computer and the wiring, and the stock gauges where replaced with handmade tear drop gauges. This was done to reduce the length of the steering column for the ’56 steering wheel.

Underneath the hood is a 6.0L ripped from an ’09 Pontiac G8. This motor has been modified with a computer programed by Street Performance for increased fuel and air intake. The 6.0L is tied to a 6L80E six-speed automatic transmission. With an estimated 355hp and a power to weight ratio better than a G8 this ’69 Nova should be a real screamer on the street.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, you find yourself admiring a modern 1960s car with 1950s styling. This was a rare and memorable treat. Check out ScottieDTV’s video of the car at the Goodguys PPG Nationals in Columbus above.
