Most people know about Hellwig Products for their sway control components for trucks and campers, but the truth is that they have also been producing components for automotive performance enthusiasts, too.

For years they’ve offered their own line of front and rear sway bars for anything from Tri-5 Chevrolet to modern musclecars. At SEMA this year, they showed us that they are getting serious about the Pro-Touring movement with a display in their booth that highlights the next phase of stiffening up classic musclecar frames and suspensions.

The first thing you may not have noticed is the Frame FX chassis stiffening components on their own early A-body Chevrolet. They fit so well, they appear to be a part of the factory frame.

But instead of simply boxing in the open frame rails from the factory, the design followed the angle of the upper frame rail, contouring the floor pan, and the the upper stiffener is mated to the lower stiffener, making for a truly stiff chassis that offers the kind of strength never envisioned from the factory.

However, stiffening the chassis is only part of Frame FX, because they’ve added additional body mounts in the center, and have provided an alternative to the dilemma of locating a trans crossmember when engine/trans swaps take place.

As you can see from some of the photos, the crossmember is now mounted to a new support on each frame rail, which allows movement of the crossmember to mount it where it needs to be with minimal modifications – simply drill new holes and move the crossmember into position.

For suspension control, their new A-Body Control Arms feature heavy-duty Heim joints for adjustablility. Mandrel bent Control Arm Braces offer additional support to the lower control arms for pushing this chassis to it’s limits. David Wheeler, Product Specialist at Hellwig, has been busy at work designing new components to help Hellwig expand their automotive capabilities, and from the looks of his Frame FX components, and the other modifications we’ve seen to this A-Body chassis, there’s no denying that Hellwig Products has been taking things to the next level, adding to their already successful musclecar sway bars.

Wheeler said, “It would have been simpler to just box the frame rail in, but we wanted to provide the strength necessary to keep this frame rail from twisting. And this design allows for variances in frame rails from years of abuse, accidents, or improper frame straightening.” We’ve never known Wheeler as someone who settles for good enough – and his commitment to Hellwig shows in the products he develops.
