Video: Tuning Thursdays: Ween Loves El Caminos But Hates His Groin

Hello all, and welcome back to Tuning Thursdays, where you can kick back, imbibe your preferred libations, and plan to plan what you’ll do for the rest of the day. For today’s episode, we scraped the bottom of the barrel to find what may be the weirdest, nigh-performance-art excuse for a Chevy-related song ever immortalized in a studio setting.

Don’t stare at this album cover for too long. It’s possessed by GodWeenSatan. Photo: Fanart.com

The “artist”: Ween, comprised of lead singer Gene Ween (pseudonym for Aaron Freeman, the lead vocalist) and Dean Ween (pseudonym for Mickey Melchiondo, the lead guitarist). The song: “El Camino,” the 15th track on Gene’s former band’s (called Ween) first studio album, GodWeenSatan. The song definitely falls under the alternative rock genre, mixed with a kind of matador-style Spanish music, progressing through the exploits of three Detroit vehicles–the Chevrolet El Camino, the Ford Toronado, and the Chrysler Cordoba.

Flourishing “L”s and throaty pronunciations give the song added flair, and about halfway into the song the guys just repeat “Cuando”–Spanish for “when”–over and over as the music intensifies and peaks. Following that absurd climax, the iconic riff from Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” is borrowed, as are its lyrics, which are ground into garbled mush by way of drug-addled post-production.

In May of last year, for better or worse, Dean and Gene went their separate ways. For his own part, Gene Ween made a bit of a headline return in December when he released a song called “Genene” amidst reports that he had flown to Belgium for a “transformative procedure.”

So, the guy went there to get an expensive gender reassignment surgery, which any jealous woman will do for free if given the proper tools. Just sayin’. Clearly, Gene didn’t have a genie, yet dreamt of being Genene by cleaving off his weenie. Or maybe it was all just a gag.

So have a happy Thursday, and if you leave with anything today, hopefully it’s a realization of where your artistic tastes lie. See you soon.
