Since the American Modern crew complete the grunge work on the replacement frame last week for their 1965 Malibu SS, this week they tackle priming, sanding and even a bit of body work. Check it out in the video above.
A layer of self-etching primer will do any frame a lot of good. Not only will it seal out any hint of rust, it’ll also make the frame into a smooth painting surface.
To prep for the self-etching primer, Rick Drewry and the American Modern crew have picked up the necessary tools for the project, mainly a paint gun, and mixed the primer. Then they wiped on a layer of lacquer thinner to get any residue that was still on the frame off before hitting the metal with its first coat of primer.
After the first coat of primer, another coat goes on, but not before the crew scuffs up the frame’s surface. This helps the second primer stick and preps the frame for any kind of metal work that’s needed. The frame is then once again sanded before the body filler is laid down on the frame’s surface.
Now you may be asking yourself, why are they using body filler on the frame? Well, the American Modern crew is going for superior appearance and by using body filler on the frame, they can eliminate any unsightly pitting that you can see on the metal. This will benefit the group once they start painting the frame and if the car is ever shown. A little bit of extra work goes a long way in the classic show circuit!
Be sure to check back next week to see what the American Modern crew is up to next!
