As you probably have not heard, Japanese automaker Suzuki is closing its North American operations. It is the end of an era for a brand that nobody really had anything to say about, good or bad. Hence Suzuki is shutting its doors, leaving a legacy of cars that emit little emotional response from consumers, who more often than not express surprise that Suzuki even still sells cars in America.
While factory Suzuki cars are nothing special, hot rodders have been taking these lightweight rides and dropping V8 engines into them for more than a decade. Jalopnik came across this Charlottesville, North Carolina Craigslist ad for a V8-powered Suzuki X-90 mini-SUV.
The Suzuki what? The X-90, that’s what, a two-year replacement for the Suzuki Samauri. One look at the Japanese cutesy styling, and we can see why it wasn’t a big hit with American SUV buyers. Keep in mind, this 1997 X-90 came out when Escalades, Suburbans, and Explorers were the “in” things. Stock, the X-90 came with a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine that didn’t even make 95 horsepower. No wonder people didn’t buy them!
But one hot rodder replaced that 95 horsepower paperweight with a small-block Chevy boasting a host of mild upgrades like a hotter cam, an aluminum intake, and an Edelbrock caburetor. Backed by a 700R4 transmission with a 3,500 RPM stall, this Suzuki otherwise looks like a very weird, but very plain car. Ultimate sleeper? It certainly is a contender, and at $6,500, it can be yours.
