New “Muscle Cars Forever” Postage Stamps Unveiled

Today the United States Postal Service unveiled their new “Muscle Cars Forever” postage stamps. The stamps are part of the America on the Move stamp line, and will feature five of the most iconic muscle cars of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. The cars chosen to be represented on the stamps are:

  • 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
  • 1970 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda
  • 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona
  • 1967 Shelby GT-500
  • 1966 Pontiac GTO

The stamps were revealed by Richard Petty, Kyle Petty, and Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe as part of the festivities surrounding this weekend’s Daytona 500. “The muscle cars gave everyday Americans the opportunity to experience the rush of driving a fast, powerful car,” Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe told reporters from the Associated Press. “Just looking at the stamps evokes a feeling of speed. As Forever stamps, they’ll always be good for mailing a First-Class letter anytime in the future. And when you think about it, that’s fitting. Because these stamps—just like the great cars they represent—are timeless.”

The amazing paintings featured on the stamps are the work of artist Tom Fritz from, Newbury Park, California. The majority of Fritz’s work focuses on automobiles, and he has done commissioned work in the past for both General Motors and Ford Motor Company.

Creating a detailed painting on less than one square inch is a real challenge, so Fritz says he focused on using bright colors and sharp lines to indicate speed and “emotive quality” that muscle cars are known for. For more info check out this interview Fritz recently did with the Ventura County Star, and head over to the U.S. Postal Service website to get your own booklet of the Muscle Cars Forever stamps.
