SEMA always brings out the best and baddest muscle cars, but it also brings out some eyebrow-raising vehicles as well. The thing about automotive customization is that the only real limit is your imagination (and your checkbook). If you’ve got enough time, money, and skill, anything is possible, no matter how absurd or ridiculous.
Take this miniature Camaro kit car, based on a VW Bug. Carscoop came across this automotive oddity on the Collector Car website, and we can’t help but be both bamboozled and oddly attracted to this wacky ride.
Back in the 1970’s, the gas crunch and Arab Oil Embargo put the squeeze on muscle cars and enthusiast’s wallets. People just couldn’t afford their gas guzzling muscle cars anymore, and many people made the jump to more economical vehicles like the Ford Pinto and ever-popular VW Bug. Not everyone cared for the styling though, so kit car companies out there built fiberglass bodies to replace the Bug’s timeless looks. One of those kits just happened to be a Camaro.
Obviously, this kit car is a whole lot shorter than an actual Camaro. The donor car is a 1976 Bug with a 1600 cc engine with dual carbs, and it actually has Corvette rally wheels too. This Camaro/Bug also has just two seats, but that doesn’t really take away from this unique vehicle. It even has a convertible top! This is one of those cars that you either love, or hate, but least they didn’t ruin a real Camaro, right?
